Let’s Talk for a Minute on the Level

Making sure your project is level is extremely important but not always easy. The state of being level is relative to the environment—to your floors, to your walls, and to the other line of sight items in your room. And that’s why at ARHTX, we always use a laser level for installation and a bubble level as backup.

The laser level projects a beam of light onto the surface that you’re trying to level. The laser is best mounted on a tripod and the focused light beam is shone vertically or horizontally or both depending upon what you’re trying to level. It’s important when setting the laser on the ground that you’re on the highest point of the floor in the room.

For instance, when putting lower cabinets in place, the laser line is placed along the top of the cabinet box. Keeping your laser in that same spot for the duration of the install will ensure that all your cabinets will be level with each other, with the wall and with the highest flooring point. The laser level provides a reference for the entire project—not just one cabinet or one part of a counter.

Bubble levels only show a relationship with the item the level is placed on. Using only a bubble level does not place what you’re trying to level in relation to its surroundings. Bubble levels can even make cabinets look off in relation to the floor and to other in situ items around what you’re trying to level. The laser, on the other hand, creates a relative space that is as dependable and accurate as modern affordable technology can provide.
